Botswana delivered a remarkable performance to win the men’s 4x400 metres relay under torrential rain on Sunday, edging past the United States and South Africa in a dramatic photo finish to become the first African nation to claim the title.

Despite challenging conditions, the U.S., who had earlier scraped into the final after a runoff victory against Kenya, led at the last changeover.

But 21-year-old Collen Kebinatshipi, fresh from winning the individual title, produced a sensational anchor leg to secure gold in 2:57.76.

The Americans, who had won nine of the last 10 world titles, fielded an entirely new lineup for the final and finished second in 2:57.83, narrowly ahead of South Africa by just two-thousandths of a second.

In the women’s relay, the U.S. reasserted dominance as 400m champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone anchored them to victory in 3:16.61.

The Jamaicans claimed silver in 3:19.25, while the Dutch defending champions, led by 400m hurdles gold medallist Femke Bol, took bronze in 3:20.18.
