Central University engages NACOC after arrest of 5 students over alleged cannabis operation

Management of Central University has confirmed that it is working closely with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and other relevant authorities following the arrest of five students over their alleged involvement in the production and distribution of cannabis and cannabis-infused products on campus.

In an official statement issued on June 19, 2026, the university said it had become aware of reports concerning the detention of five individuals by NACOC following an incident linked to activities organised during the Students' Representative Council (SRC) Week celebrations.

According to the statement signed by the Registrar, the university is currently seeking verified information regarding the incident while allowing law enforcement agencies to complete their investigations.

"At this stage, the University is engaging with NACOC and other relevant authorities to establish the facts and obtain verified information regarding the circumstances surrounding the matter," the statement said.

The university added that it would refrain from commenting further on the allegations until investigations are concluded, stressing the need to avoid speculation and allow due legal processes to take their course.

Students Allegedly Produced and Sold Cannabis-Infused Products

The five suspects, reportedly students in Levels 100, 300 and 400, were arrested following intelligence gathered by authorities regarding suspected drug-related activities within the university community.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the students were allegedly involved in the production and sale of cannabis-infused products, including ice cream, sobolo, toffees, pepper and eggs. Authorities also suspect that they were dealing in raw cannabis.

During the operation, NACOC officials reportedly recovered quantities of suspected narcotic substances, which have since been seized and submitted for forensic examination.

SRC Week Activities Suspended

As part of efforts to maintain safety and order on campus, Central University announced the immediate suspension of all remaining SRC Week activities pending a comprehensive review of the incident and existing event management procedures.

The university reiterated its commitment to providing a secure and conducive environment for learning while upholding the highest standards of discipline, integrity and responsibility among students and staff.

NACOC Intensifies Fight Against Drug Activities on Campuses

NACOC has reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and substance abuse within educational institutions across Ghana. The commission has repeatedly warned students against engaging in the production, sale or consumption of illegal narcotic substances.

The arrested students are expected to assist investigators as authorities work to determine the full extent of the alleged operation and identify any other individuals who may be connected to the activities under investigation.

Central University assured students, parents, staff, alumni and the general public that it is fully cooperating with NACOC and other state agencies in the ongoing investigations.
