That area is evolving.Our laws are coming up. So again, we are working with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Bank of Ghana to bring the regulation. But in terms of tax laws, one, the tax law is still not a new one. A disturbing domestic violence incident unfolded in Anum, within the Assin North District of the Central Region, where a 35-year-old woman, Faustina Ackom, was allegedly shot by her husband, 41-year-old Wahibu Bukari, over suspicions of infidelity.

The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday after Bukari reportedly confronted his wife upon discovering unfamiliar contact numbers on her mobile phone. 

According to preliminary accounts, he woke her at about 12:30 a.m. for questioning, which escalated into a violent altercation.

During the confrontation, Bukari allegedly shot Faustina in the left arm and chest as she attempted to flee. 

Her cries for help drew the attention of neighbours, who rushed to her aid, as per Graphic Online.

Faustina, a trader and mother of four, is currently receiving treatment at St Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.

Eyewitness Lydia Yeboah noted that the suspect, who has been battling health issues, had long expressed doubts about his wife’s fidelity. Following the attack, Bukari fled the scene and remains at large.

Police suspect he may have escaped to Assin Fosu, Kushia, or Twifo Praso. 

Meanwhile, a team from the Assin Fosu Divisional Police Command has visited the victim at the hospital to assess her condition and gather firsthand information.

Law enforcement has launched a full-scale investigation into the case.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared a general amnesty for members who were either suspended or facing disciplinary action, in a move aimed at promoting unity and reconciliation within the party.

The decision was communicated in a directive signed by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, following an Emergency National Council meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and waives any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement read.

The party, however, clarified that members seeking reinstatement must formally apply to the national secretariat. Additionally, reinstated members will not be eligible to contest in any internal party election until a mandatory two-year waiting period has passed.

According to the directive, the measure reflects the NPP’s determination to consolidate internal cohesion, strengthen solidarity, and prepare collectively for the political tasks ahead—particularly the 2028 general elections.

The statement further cautioned party leaders at all levels against arbitrary suspensions, stressing that disciplinary processes must strictly adhere to the party’s constitution.

“The National Secretariat requests your full compliance with this directive,” it concluded, urging executives across the country to abide by the new guidelines.

Police have confirmed the arrest of a 47-year-old man following an incident in which Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was allegedly subjected to racist abuse during the club’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield.

The match was temporarily suspended in the 29th minute after Semenyo, 25, reported the abuse to the referee. 

Officers later escorted a supporter in a wheelchair from the stadium before making the arrest.

Merseyside Police announced the man is being held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, match commander, said:

“Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form. We take incidents like this very seriously and will be proactively seeking football banning orders against those responsible.”

MTN Ghana has announced a scheduled system upgrade that will result in a temporary suspension of all Mobile Money (MoMo) services for six hours on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The telecom leader stated that the downtime will occur from 12:00 am to 6:00 am to facilitate essential maintenance and system improvements. 

During this period, all MoMo functionalities — including deposits, withdrawals, person-to-person transfers, and merchant payments — will be unavailable.

This brief outage carries significant implications for Ghana’s financial ecosystem, where MTN Mobile Money has become the dominant transaction platform, processing billions of cedis annually and playing a crucial role in driving financial inclusion.

In an interview with Citi FM, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, emphasised the importance of the planned upgrade.

"Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 am. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. 

This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."

According to MTN, the upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance customer experience, following previous modernisation projects aimed at improving transaction speed, strengthening fraud prevention measures, and introducing innovative digital services.

The company assured customers that all funds will remain safe and services will be restored immediately after the maintenance window.

The Ghana Police Service has released details of road closures and traffic diversions in Accra ahead of the interdenominational and interfaith state funeral for the eight individuals who lost their lives in the tragic military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom on Wednesday, August 6.

In a statement dated Thursday, August 14, the police announced that the following roads within the event vicinity will be closed to vehicular traffic:

- 28th February Road – From CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.

- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light – On Lokko Street.

- Castle Road – From AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.

- Starlet 91 Road – Closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Motorists are advised to take note of the following alternative routes during the funeral:

Vehicles from La, Labone, and Osu using 28th February Road towards the Accra Central Business District and the Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light, connecting to Oxford Street.

Principal contractors include RTX Missiles and Defence, Lockheed Martin, and BAE Systems. The DSCA confirmed that no U.S. government or contractor personnel will be permanently stationed in Nigeria as part of the deal.

“The actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed agreements,” the agency noted, clarifying that the $346 million figure represents the maximum estimated cost.

A raging fire swept through multiple businesses near Nogora Junction, close to Ho Technical University, on the evening of Wednesday, August 13, causing destruction estimated at over GHS 1 million.

The blaze, which ignited around 6:00 p.m., quickly engulfed several establishments, including the popular Nogora Pub, two boutiques, and adjoining shops. 

Eyewitnesses say the fire spread rapidly, leaving business owners and workers with little time to salvage property.

“We immediately grabbed fire extinguishers, but the fire was too intense,” a pub employee recounted, adding that persistent power fluctuations in the area earlier that day may have triggered the incident.

Another affected shop owner echoed this suspicion, noting that electrical lights had been flickering for hours before the fire erupted.

“We were inside the pub when one of the staff raised the alarm. We tried using fire extinguishers, but the flames were uncontrollable, so we called the fire service,” one eyewitness told 3News.


“Since there was no gas or cooking involved, we suspect an electrical fault started the fire.”

Business owners described the losses as catastrophic, with one estimating the damage to exceed GHS 1 million.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service in Ho responded promptly, battling the inferno for over two hours before bringing it under control. 

Divisional Fire Officer Grade II Sedem Tay, the Ho Municipal Commander, commended his team for their swift action and assured that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.

Fire near Ho Technical University destroys shops worth over GH₵1 Million

Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, a Justice of the Court of Appeal and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has officially been recalled to serve the judiciary in a full capacity as a judge.

The directive, issued by the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, requires Justice Oppong to hand over his role as Director of Legal Education to Professor Raymond Atuguba, a former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law.

According to a letter dated August 8, 2025, Justice Oppong’s recall takes effect from September 1, 2025, with Prof. Atuguba stepping in as Acting Director until a substantive appointment is made.

“The Judiciary now requires your full services, so you are recalled from the position of Director of Legal Education with effect from 1st September 2025.
You are to hand over to Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, who has been appointed Ag. Hearts of Oak coach Didi Dramani promises winning season

The Kwabenya Circuit Court has sentenced a 58-year-old mason, Joshua Bledi, to 10 years in prison for incest after impregnating his 17-year-old daughter, who has since given birth to a seven-month-old baby, according to the Ghana News Agency.

Bledi pleaded guilty to the charge, admitting that the prosecution’s account was accurate, and appealed for leniency. 

The court, however, convicted and sentenced him, taking into account his age, the premeditated nature of the crime, and the fact that he did not waste the court’s time by admitting guilt.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gershon Togbe Achondo, described the offence as a cultural abomination and noted that such cases have been increasing in recent times. He urged the court to impose a stiff sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.

The prosecution revealed that the victim, a hairdressing apprentice from Musuku, Kwabenya, lived with her father after her mother instructed her to do so. 

She later became pregnant and went to the Ga East Hospital to deliver but faced challenges in paying her medical bills.

The Social Welfare Department at the hospital intervened and waived her bills.

During enquiries, the victim disclosed that her father was responsible for her pregnancy and had been sexually abusing her repeatedly.

A report was filed with the Kwabenya Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU), and a police medical examination confirmed the abuse, leading to Bledi’s arrest.

Meanwhile, the Abuse Relief Corps, a non-profit organisation, has stepped in to support the victim and her baby.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has commended residents who voluntarily returned parts and belongings taken from the recent helicopter crash site at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

Speaking during a live session on his social media page, Dr Amoakohene said the items retrieved will significantly aid ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash. 

He praised the swift public response to calls for the return of missing parts.

“Some parts of the helicopter and other belongings were not found at the scene, so we announced that anyone who picked something up should return it. We promised a small reward, and thankfully, some people have submitted items to the unit committee and assembly members,” he said.

The minister appealed to anyone still in possession of crash-related items to return them immediately, stressing that every component, no matter how small, is vital for the investigation.

“Anyone still holding on to parts or belongings from the crash should return them, no matter how small. These things are needed for the investigation,” he added.

Dr Amoakohene further disclosed that counselling psychologists have been arranged to provide emotional and psychological support to families of the victims, as well as individuals who were at the scene, particularly those involved in the forest search and recovery efforts.

He also noted that counselling services would be available to people who travelled from other regions for the event prior to the crash and to anyone affected by the tragedy. A dedicated contact number will soon be released for those seeking assistance.

Concluding his address, Dr Amoakohene expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and solidarity during this challenging period, assuring that all returned items will contribute greatly to uncovering the full circumstances of the crash.

A major fire outbreak on Monday evening has destroyed the housemaster’s bungalow and partially damaged the boys’ dormitory at Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

The incident occurred around 7:00 PM and reportedly began in the housemaster’s bungalow, located adjacent to the boys’ dormitory. 

Eyewitnesses say the flames spread rapidly, intensifying before emergency responders could arrive.

By the time personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reached the scene, the bungalow had been completely consumed by fire. 

The blaze had begun spreading to the boys’ dormitory, raising concerns of a larger catastrophe.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the GNFS, firefighters managed to bring the situation under control and prevent the complete destruction of the dormitory. 

Their timely intervention was instrumental in averting further devastation.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. 

School authorities and fire officials have confirmed that investigations will be launched to determine the source of the blaze.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has firmly refuted circulating claims that the GHC18 million secured through the association’s latest media rights agreement with Adesa Production Limited (APL) originated from government funding.

Announced last week in Accra ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, the landmark broadcast partnership is set to inject GHC1 million into each top-tier club before the campaign begins. 

The comprehensive package also promises enhanced television coverage, including the live telecast of three matches every week and a dedicated studio analysis show.

Addressing rumours that the funds were sourced from the state, Harrison Addo stressed that no direct financial contribution was made by the government.

“The government has not taken its money, and it is being given to the Football Association. The government’s role in this partnership was only to create an enabling environment, and we are grateful for the support from the government,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

He acknowledged that while the government played a key facilitative role, its contribution was non-monetary. 

Notably, he highlighted the support of prominent government officials such as Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Minister of Youth and Sports Kofi Adams.

“The Chief of Staff, Majority Leader and the Sports Minister all said that they are in support of the partnership, so the enabling environment for other companies who will also want to come and support the processes and the benefits are there.

“The government has not given us physical cash to invest in the league, but we are hoping that this partnership works well because it is in the interest of the country if it does work well, but the money is not from the government,” he added.

The Director of the Presidential Initiative on Agriculture and Agribusiness, Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, has revealed that senior high schools (SHS) across Ghana will soon begin cultivating their own farms as part of efforts to address persistent food shortages and feeding delays under the Free SHS programme.Speaking at a consultative meeting with key stakeholders at St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Accra on Friday, August 29, 2025, Dr Otokunor explained that the initiative will establish on-campus farms dedicated to seven priority crops: rice, maize, sorghum, soybeans, onions, tomatoes, and, where possible, cassava and yams.He highlighted that the intervention is aimed at reducing the rising cost of feeding 1.37 million students, which exceeded GH¢2.8 billion in 2024.“The initiative is targeting more than 15,000 acres for the cultivation of selected crops to support the food and nutritional needs of our schools,” he said.According to him, the project is expected to cut annual school feeding expenses by 30 to 50 per cent, translating into savings of between GH¢840 million and GH¢1.4 billion.These savings, he noted, would allow the government to channel resources into other critical areas of education and national development.To support the farms, schools will receive certified seeds, fertilisers, mechanisation services, and training in climate-smart agriculture.Dr Otokunor emphasised that no direct cash transfers will be made to the schools.“Every input that is required will be provided. Seeds will be provided, fertiliser will be provided, and mechanisation will be provided,” he assured.Each school will establish a farm committee, chaired by the headmaster and comprising teachers and students, to ensure transparency and accountability.Furthermore, between 1,400 and 2,100 unemployed agriculture graduates will be recruited as farm managers, supported by national service personnel. The programme is expected to generate up to 10,000 indirect jobs across the agricultural value chain.For schools in urban areas where land is limited, Dr Otokunor proposed modern alternatives such as vertical farming and hydroponics.“In a small space, even a quarter of this room, you can grow the equivalent of 10 acres of vegetables using vertical farming,” he explained.The programme will also include livestock farming to enhance protein intake. It is scheduled to officially launch in September at Peki Senior High School in the Volta Region, with President John Dramani Mahama in attendance.Dr Otokunor stressed that beyond addressing food shortages, the broader vision of the initiative is to reduce Ghana’s dependence on food imports, minimise post-harvest losses through school-based supply chains, and provide students with hands-on agricultural skills at a time when unemployment remains at 13.6 per cent.“This initiative is not simply about farming. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu.The Association, regarded as the umbrella body of farmers and fishermen across the country, said it was “deeply shocked and dismayed” that such comments could be made by a leader of a professional organisation who, in its view, ought to conduct himself with decorum and respect.“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security and economic survival. A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 34-year-old former field officer of the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC) Trustee, Comfort Asante, to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour after she was found guilty of stealing GH¢96,490 belonging to customers of the company.Although Asante pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing and forgery, she admitted during investigations that she diverted the funds to settle a debt owed by her mother.Delivering judgement, the presiding judge, Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, ruled that Asante’s actions were criminal and must serve as a deterrent to others.<h2>How the Theft Was Uncovered</h2>The prosecutor, Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, told the court that the NTHC Trustee, a firm registered to manage pension schemes in Ghana, filed the complaint after receiving numerous reports from contributors between May 2 and 5, 2023.As a field officer, Asante’s role involved educating the public, registering clients, collecting contributions for the Tier Three Pension Scheme (SSNIT Informal Scheme Product – SISP), updating customer passbooks, and electronically recording payments into the company’s system using an official mobile phone. The system automatically generated receipt numbers and also sent SMS alerts to contributors confirming their payments.However, the company began receiving complaints from customers who claimed they were not receiving confirmation messages despite making payments through Asante. Upon reviewing their passbooks, NTHC detected discrepancies between the handwritten records and the official electronic records. It was also discovered that the receipt numbers recorded by Asante did not match those generated by the company’s system.<h2>Investigations and Conviction</h2>Following an internal audit, NTHC confirmed that Asante had misappropriated GH¢96,490 from contributions made by 32 clients. A formal complaint was lodged with the police on May 17, 2023, leading to her arrest.In her caution statement, Asante confessed to the offence. After a full trial, she was convicted and handed a five-year jail term with hard labour.

A Tarkwa District Court One has sentenced a motorbike mechanic, Godfred Atta Hagan, to six months imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of stealing a deliveryman’s Royal motorbike valued at GH¢13,000.Hagan, who resides at Tamso Compound, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Charles Owusu Nsiah.According to the prosecution, led by Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, the complainant, Isaac Mensah Mbeah, a delivery rider living at Tamso, parked his Royal motorbike with registration number M-25-WT278 at his shop near the Tamso Municipal Assembly Basic School on April 16, 2025. Later that night, around 1:00 a.m., he discovered the motorbike had been stolen.A witness informed Mbeah that Hagan had been seen riding the stolen bike away. The matter was reported to the Tarkwa police, and Hagan subsequently went into hiding. On May 11, 2025, police received a tip-off that he was lodging at a friend’s house, leading to his arrest.During interrogation, Hagan led the police to the home of an accomplice known as Gucci, who is currently on the run. Some Ghanaians have welcomed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision not to contest the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.

In an official statement issued on August 11, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP announced it would not field a candidate in the race.

“The circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant and the possibility of further polarisation of the country at this critical time informed our stance,” the statement read. 

The party further described participation under the current circumstances as “inhumane and unconscionable”.

According to the NPP, the decision was made in light of the sensitive nature of the vacancy and concerns about deepening political divisions. 

The move also aligns with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who was among eight victims of a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In interviews with [Ghana News Media](https://www.ghnewsmedia.com/), members of the public praised the party’s stance. 

“Ideally, it is befitting that the New Patriotic Party opted out of the coming election. Most by-elections we witness have massive fights which also end up killing individuals,” said Nii Lartey.

“I applaud the NPP for taking such an exemplary step. This will promote peace in our country. But that does not necessarily mean the NDC should not contest for the Akwatia by-election. The circumstances around both deaths are different.”

Under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant, the Clerk of Parliament must notify the Electoral Commission within seven days. 

A by-election must then be held within thirty days, except in cases of death, where the period extends to sixty days

The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged to take over the sponsorship of 47 medical students who were previously supported by the late Tamale Central MP and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Mr Iddrisu made the commitment on Tuesday, 12 August, after the students paid tribute to Dr Murtala during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) in Tamale.

The students described the late MP as a dedicated leader who consistently prioritised education and the welfare of young people. 

They also appealed to the government, benevolent organisations and individuals to continue supporting them in their studies.

In response, Haruna Iddrisu assured them of his readiness to take on the responsibility, saying he would ensure their education continues without interruption.

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was among eight people who lost their lives on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in a forested area at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofrom District of the Ashanti Region.
