Education Minister orders urgent GES reforms after BECE exam paper delay in Sefwi Wiawso

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to implement immediate reforms after a major disruption during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Boako MA JHS in Sefwi Wiawso.

The incident involved candidates receiving answer sheets without question papers, leading to delays and concerns over examination management.

BECE Exam Disruption Raises Concerns

During his visit to the examination centre, Haruna Iddrisu expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that students had already lost valuable exam time.

“Ordinarily, you should have been 15 minutes into the exams. You should have been seated at 8:30 and started at 9:00, but I see answer sheets without question papers are now on their way,” he said.

He stressed the need to urgently review the transportation and distribution of BECE examination materials to avoid a repeat of such errors.

GES Ordered to Implement Immediate Reforms

The Education Minister instructed the GES leadership to act quickly, emphasising that the delay had affected the smooth conduct of the examination.

“So we have to review how exam questions are transported to the examination centres… because you’ve taken 15 minutes of their time,” he added.

Candidates Urged to Stay Focused

Despite the disruption, Haruna Iddrisu reassured candidates to remain calm and confident, stating that the exam content would strictly come from the approved syllabus.

He encouraged students to trust their preparation and remain focused on performing well in the BECE.

Integrity Emphasised in BECE Conduct

The minister also urged candidates to uphold integrity throughout the examination process, reinforcing the importance of discipline and fairness in national exams.
