GES releases 2026/2027 academic calendar for basic schools

The Ghana Education Service has officially released the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year for all basic schools across Ghana, covering Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools.
The new calendar, announced in a statement signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, outlines reopening dates, vacation periods, mid-term breaks, and the timetable for the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The first term begins September 8, 2026.
According to the schedule, the first term will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and end on Thursday, December 17, 2026, spanning 15 weeks.

Students and teachers will observe a two-day mid-term break on November 5 and 6, 2026. The first-term vacation will run from December 18, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
Second Term Schedule
The second term will commence on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, and conclude on Thursday, March 25, 2027, covering a 12-week academic period.
Vacation for the second term is expected to take place from March 26 to April 19, 2027.

Third Term and End of Academic Year
The third and final term will reopen on Tuesday, April 20, 2027, and close on Thursday, July 22, 2027, officially ending the 2026/2027 academic year after 14 weeks.
2027 BECE Dates Announced
GES also confirmed that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be conducted from Wednesday, May 5, to Wednesday, May 12, 2027.
Public Holidays and Mid-Term Breaks
The Service noted that all public holidays within the academic calendar will be observed nationwide. Additionally, each school term will include a two-day mid-term break for students and staff.
GES further urged school heads, teachers, parents, and guardians to take note of the approved dates and make the necessary preparations to ensure a smooth and effective academic year.
