Erling Haaland struck twice, and Phil Foden also found the net as Manchester City reignited their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s derby.

City entered the clash nine points behind defending champions Liverpool, who earlier edged Burnley 1-0 to maintain their perfect start.

But Pep Guardiola’s men responded emphatically, showcasing their quality while increasing the pressure on United boss Ruben Amorim.

Foden, handed his first start of the season, opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a precise header from Jeremy Doku’s cross.

United offered little threat in the opening half, with Benjamin Sesko’s early attempt easily gathered by debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The second half belonged to Haaland. After a slick move involving Nico O’Reilly, Foden and Doku, the Norwegian chipped a composed finish over Altay Bayindir in the 53rd minute to double City’s lead.

Though he spurned a chance moments later by hitting the post, Haaland made no mistake when played through by Bernardo Silva, slotting home his second in the 68th minute.

City might have added more through Tijjani Reijnders, while Casemiro wasted a rare opening for United, and Donnarumma produced a fine save to deny Bryan Mbeumo.

The result leaves City eighth in the table with six points from four matches, while United languish in 14th with just four points.
