Hearts of Oak began their GHALCA Top 4 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions at the Legon Stadium, thanks to a brilliant free kick from Ransford Mensah.

The clash lived up to its billing, producing end-to-end action, with both teams creating chances in a thrilling contest.

Heart of Lions introduced their new signing, Liberian striker Chauncy Freeman, who made his debut just days after joining the club.

The Kpando-based side nearly grabbed the opener in the 14th minute following a defensive mistake from Hearts, but former Phobian striker Kwadwo Obeng Jr failed to capitalise, dragging his effort wide.

The breakthrough came six minutes before halftime. After Hearts won a free-kick on the right side of attack, Ransford Mensah stepped up and unleashed a curling strike that flew past the goalkeeper into the net. The spectacular effort gave the Phobians a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Lions Push, Sharif Stands Tall

The second half saw Heart of Lions dominate possession and threaten the Hearts' goal on several occasions. They struck the crossbar and forced goalkeeper Shuaib Sharif into some outstanding saves.

In the final 10 minutes, Obeng Jr tested Sharif again with a powerful long-range strike, but the Hearts shot-stopper produced a crucial save to preserve his side’s slender advantage.
