Dean Henderson was the hero as Crystal Palace beat Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.
The game ended 2-2 in normal time. Henderson saved two penalties from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah fired over.
Substitute Justin Devenny then smashed the winning spot-kick past Alisson Becker to seal the trophy.
Liverpool started strongly with four debutants in the lineup. They took the lead after just four minutes when Hugo Ekitike finished a flowing move involving nine players, slotting Florian Wirtz’s pass into the bottom-right corner.
Palace hit back quickly. Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr in the box, and Jean-Philippe Mateta sent Alisson the wrong way from the spot to make it 1-1.
Liverpool regained the lead in the 21st minute. Jeremie Frimpong’s cross-shot looped over Henderson into the net.
Palace improved after the break. Chris Richards forced a save from Alisson, and Eberechi Eze also went close.
Their pressure paid off in the 77th minute when Sarr finished calmly to level the match.
With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties. Salah missed Liverpool’s first, blasting over.

Henderson then saved from Mac Allister and Elliott to give Palace control. Borna Sosa missed the chance to win it for Palace, hitting the bar, but Devenny made no mistake moments later.
The victory adds another piece of silverware to Palace’s collection after last season’s FA Cup win.
