Nigeria defeated Rwanda 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Oyo to keep their Mundial hopes alive.

The Super Eagles's decisive moment came six minutes after the restart when new Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare pounced inside the box, smashing home from close range to seal all three points.

The win sees Nigeria leapfrog Rwanda into third place in Group C, now six points adrift of leaders South Africa, whom they face in a pivotal clash in Bloemfontein on Tuesday (16:00 GMT).

With only three matches remaining and just the group winners guaranteed automatic qualification, the Super Eagles face a must-win situation against Bafana Bafana if they are to remain in contention and avoid missing a second consecutive World Cup.

Nigeria’s chances could, however, be boosted by an ongoing FIFA disciplinary case. South Africa risk being docked three points after allegedly fielding an ineligible player during their March win over Lesotho, with a ruling still pending.

Should the Super Eagles fail to catch South Africa, they could still reach the African play-offs as one of the four best second-placed teams, a path that offers another opportunity through a final intercontinental qualifier.
