Nii Lante Vanderpuye leads NDC National Chairmanship race – Poll

Former Odododiodio MP and Minister for Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) national chairmanship, according to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics.

The latest survey of NDC delegates places Vanderpuye in the lead with 26.8% support, ahead of former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, who polled 19.3%.

The poll also shows NDC National Vice-Chairman Awudu Sofo Azorka securing 6.4%, narrowly ahead of Ghana's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare, who received 6.3%.

Former Local Government Minister and current Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Board Chairman Akwasi Opong-Fosu garnered 1.7%, while 4.1% of delegates backed other potential candidates.

A significant 35.3% of respondents, however, said they were yet to decide on their preferred candidate.

Vanderpuye leads across all regional blocs.

The survey found that Vanderpuye enjoys the strongest support across all four regional blocs assessed by the poll.

His regional performance includes:

  • Swing Bloc (Greater Accra, Central and Western): 32%

  • Akan Bloc: 24%

  • Volta and Oti Bloc: 25%

  • Northern Bloc: 26%

Delegates back Asiedu Nketia to remain chairman.

Despite growing interest in new leadership, the poll indicates that most delegates still support Johnson Asiedu Nketia remaining as national chairman.

According to the findings:

  • 61% support him staying in office.

  • 26% oppose the idea.

  • 13% remain undecided.

Asiedu Nketia leads potential 2028 presidential race.

The survey also explored possible contenders for the NDC's 2028 presidential nomination.

Asiedu Nketia remains the leading choice with 27%, although his support has dipped from 29% recorded in April.

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson placed second with 22%, improving from 19% in the previous poll.

The proportion of undecided delegates increased from 24% in April to 30% in July.

Tight race between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson

In a hypothetical head-to-head contest, the poll found Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Dr Cassiel Ato Forson virtually tied.

  • Johnson Asiedu Nketia: 34%

  • Dr Cassiel Ato Forson: 33%

  • Undecided: 33%

According to Global InfoAnalytics, the difference falls within the survey's margin of error, making the race statistically even.

Poll methodology

The survey was conducted between July 8 and July 14, 2026, involving 5,637 NDC delegates across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Global InfoAnalytics said it used probability random sampling and computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI). The poll has a 99% confidence level with a margin of error of ±1.7%.
