Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that head coach Luis Enrique will undergo surgery after being involved in a cycling accident.

The French champions announced on Friday that the 55-year-old Spaniard sustained a fractured collarbone and required treatment from emergency services before being scheduled for an operation.

In a statement released via the club’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, PSG wrote:
“Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone. The Club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery.

Further updates will be shared in due course.”

It is still unclear when Enrique will return to the dugout. PSG’s next Ligue 1 fixture is set for September 14, when they welcome Lens to the Parc des Princes after the international break.

The Parisians have started the season strongly, recording three straight league victories after their dramatic UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham in Udine, where they prevailed in a penalty shootout.

They followed up with a commanding 6-3 win against Toulouse, along with 1-0 victories over both Nantes and Angers.

Enrique, appointed in the summer of 2023 to replace Christophe Galtier, has already established a remarkable legacy at PSG.

Under his leadership, the club secured consecutive Ligue 1 and French Cup titles and finally achieved long-awaited Champions League success in Munich in May.

He also guided the team to the final of the inaugural summer Club World Cup, where they were beaten by Chelsea.

A highly decorated coach, Enrique previously enjoyed success at Barcelona, where he won multiple trophies, and also managed Spain, Celta Vigo, and Roma.
