Woman and ex-soldier face charges over alleged GH¢1.68m GAF recruitment scam

A 41-year-old ward assistant, Patience Mbaye, has been arraigned before an Accra court for her alleged involvement in a recruitment scam that reportedly defrauded dozens of individuals seeking enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
According to the prosecution, Mbaye allegedly collected GH¢675,000 from 26 individuals after falsely promising to secure their recruitment into the military.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Frank Morgan Dorvi, told the court that Mbaye allegedly acted in collaboration with ex-Senior Warrant Officer Jeffery Naboung, who is currently on the run.
Investigators further alleged that Naboung collected an additional GH¢1,005,000 from 47 other victims under the same recruitment scheme.
The two accused persons have been jointly charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and three counts of defrauding by false pretences.
Mbaye pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The court subsequently granted her bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three justified sureties, one of whom must be a public servant.
As part of her bail conditions, she has been directed to report to the case investigator every Wednesday and Friday. The case has been adjourned to July 27, 2026.
How the Alleged Recruitment Scam Unfolded
The prosecution identified the complainants as Fatima Adam and Abdul Malik Ali, a prisons officer and an okada rider, respectively.
According to prosecutors, Ali met Mbaye sometime between 2023 and 2024, during which she allegedly claimed to have connections within the Ghana Armed Forces that could facilitate the recruitment of interested applicants.
Ali reportedly informed his sister about the opportunity, while Fatima Adam also became interested after learning of the alleged recruitment arrangement.

The court heard that Fatima contacted Mbaye by telephone to verify the legitimacy of the offer. Mbaye allegedly assured her that she and Naboung had successfully assisted several individuals to gain admission into the military.
The prosecution further alleged that Mbaye instructed Ali to pay GH¢25,000 into a GCB Bank account belonging to Naboung as part of the recruitment process.
Investigators said the suspects later received GH¢675,000 and GH¢1,005,000, respectively, through their GCB Bank accounts from multiple applicants hoping to join the Ghana Armed Forces.
However, the promised recruitment never materialised, and despite repeated demands from the victims, the money was allegedly not refunded.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to investigations and the prosecution currently before the court.
