Breaking News: Carlos Queiroz to name Black Stars World Cup squad on June 1

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has confirmed that Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz will announce Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 1.
Okraku made the announcement via Facebook following Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in a pre-World Cup international friendly played in Puebla.
The Black Stars endured a difficult outing against El Tri, conceding just two minutes into the match after a costly goalkeeping error. Guillermo Martínez later doubled Mexico’s advantage as the hosts controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout large spells of the game.

Despite a slow first half, Ghana showed improvement after the break and created several chances through Joseph Afena-Gyan and Majeed Ashimeru. The Black Stars also came close when one effort struck the crossbar, but they were unable to convert their opportunities as Mexico maintained defensive discipline to secure the win.
After the match, Okraku described the friendly as a valuable opportunity for assessing young and fringe players ahead of upcoming competitions, including the Olympic qualifiers.
“Objective accomplished! This event has provided significant stage exposure for the majority of our U-23 players, who will soon assemble for the Olympic qualifiers, as well as other players who had limited playing time,” Okraku said.

He further confirmed that the World Cup squad announcement is scheduled for June 1, urging continued support for the national team.
The GFA president also hinted that several players who featured against Mexico could be included in the squad for the Olympic qualifiers.
The Black Stars will now shift focus to their next pre-World Cup friendly against Wales as preparations continue ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
