Ghana 0-4 France: Black Princesses crash out of U-20 World Cup

Ghana’s Black Princesses have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to France in their final group-stage game.

The result extends Ghana’s barren run at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, with the Black Princesses once again failing to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

France, meanwhile, secured their place in the Round of 16 with a convincing victory after producing a strong second-half performance.

Ghana had hoped to secure a result that would keep their knockout-stage hopes alive, but France took control after the break and punished lapses in concentration.

France eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Clara Bertrand found the net with a bouncing effort.

The strike proved difficult for Ghana goalkeeper Precious Akanguwie to deal with as the ball skipped past her and into the net.

The French side then doubled their advantage through a cleverly worked set-piece.

The attackers initially wheeled around in a circle before Ornella Graziani delivered the corner. The coordinated movement created space, allowing Justine Rouquet to break free and fire a powerful volley into the net.

France continued to press for more goals and were rewarded late in the game when Graziani converted a penalty to make it 3-0.

Rouquet then completed her brace late on, putting the result beyond doubt and sealing a comprehensive victory for Les Bleuettes.

Graziani was delighted with France's performance.

Graziani played a key role in France’s victory, contributing a goal and an assist, and said she was more interested in helping her team succeed than focusing on individual statistics.

"I’m not necessarily obsessed with statistics. I like to set up my teammates. So whether it’s an assist or a goal, I don’t really mind, as long as I’m there to help the team and we win. That’s the most important thing for me. But I got both today. I’d say it’s a perfect evening. So we’re going to enjoy the evening and focus on the next game now."

Sampson admits Ghana lost concentration.

Ghana coach Charles Sampson acknowledged that his team had opportunities to remain in the contest but were punished by France, particularly from set pieces.

"The two weeks [here have been great]. Many of the girls find it their first time in this sort of environment. I hope and believe that they have learned something to take away [from this experience]. We came here with the goal of going through the group stages, as we have never done it before. We knew coming into this game that with a draw we would have a chance. We were in the game and had a goal that was disallowed and then lost concentration in set pieces. France is a really good team, so we just have to accept that they were the better side."

The defeat means Ghana’s wait to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup continues.

Ghana will now return home to reflect on another disappointing campaign, while France advances to the Round of 16 with their confidence boosted by a commanding win.
