Erling Haaland inspires Norway to historic World Cup quarter-final spot as Brazil crash out

Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by defeating Brazil 2-1 in their Round of 16 clash in New Jersey, with Erling Haaland scoring twice to send the Scandinavian nation into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

The victory ended Brazil's hopes of winning a sixth World Cup title and continued Norway's remarkable unbeaten record against the South American giants.

Norway's and Brazil's Early Trade Chances

Brazil entered the contest as favourites, but Norway showed early intent and nearly took the lead through a well-worked move. However, Patrick Berg's finish was ruled out after Alexander Sørloth was caught marginally offside in the build-up.

The Seleção were then handed a golden opportunity to move ahead when Kristoffer Ajer was penalised for a challenge on Matheus Cunha inside the box following a VAR review.

Yet Brazil failed to capitalise as Bruno Guimarães saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who would go on to deliver one of the performances of the tournament.

Brazil continued to threaten, with Gabriel Martinelli and Vinícius Júnior both denied by the outstanding Nyland, while Martin Ødegaard tested Alisson Becker at the other end in an entertaining first half.

Haaland Takes Centre Stage

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Brazil increased the pressure following the introduction of teenage forward Endrick, who missed a clear opportunity shortly after coming off the bench.

Nyland remained unbeatable, producing another crucial save to deny Rayan as Norway gradually grew in confidence.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute. Andreas Schjelderup delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, and Haaland rose highest to power a superb header beyond Alisson, sparking celebrations among the Norwegian supporters.

The Manchester City striker was not finished.

With Brazil pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Haaland struck again late in the match, calmly firing a left-footed effort past Alisson to double Norway's advantage and put the result beyond doubt.

Neymar Scores Consolation as Brazil Exit

Brazil managed to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time after Leo Østigård conceded a penalty for an aerial challenge on Casemiro.

Neymar converted from the spot, but the goal arrived too late to alter the outcome as Norway held on for a famous victory.

Norway Reaches Historic Quarter-Finals

The result sends Norway into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time ever, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico.

Haaland's brace also moved him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé on seven goals in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.

For Brazil and head coach Carlo Ancelotti, the defeat marks another disappointing World Cup knockout-stage exit against European opposition. The five-time world champions have now lost each of their last seven post-group-stage World Cup matches against teams from Europe.
