The fund will be created through a partnership involving government, organised labour, the private sector, and key financial institutions.Under the arrangement, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust and the Republic Bank Ghana will collaborate with the government and labour unions to establish the facility.The fund will then be used to provide credit to state housing developers such as the State Housing Company and the Tema Development Corporation to construct housing units nationwide.“Companies like State Housing Company (SHC), Tema Development Corporation (TDC), and all the housing companies will be given credit from this fund to build houses. President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the persistent disregard for Ghana’s rent advance regulations, despite existing laws capping rent advances at a maximum of six months.He noted that weak enforcement of the law has allowed unfair rental practices to continue, with many landlords still demanding excessive advance payments from tenants across the country.Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Green City Project at Dedesua, President Mahama said many tenants, due to urgent housing needs, are often unable to report offenders, making enforcement difficult.“We have a rent court that is supposed to prosecute cases where house owners take more than six months. Unfortunately, both the house owner and the one who wants to rent the property are not prepared to go and report.“That has been the main problem in enforcing this law. The one who wants to rent needs a place to lay his head, and the landlord also wants money to invest in something. Our goal is simple: fairness, protection, and dignity for tenants,” he said.The president further highlighted that the National Home Ownership Fund will continue to offer long-term financing support, especially for retirees, to improve housing security after years of public service.He added that the Green City Project forms part of the government's broader efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit and expand access to affordable accommodation nationwide.

Stop abusing six-month rent advance cap — Mahama to landlords

Sammy Gyamfi, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, has stated that Ghana’s recent economic recovery and the stability of the cedi against the US dollar came with significant financial costs, largely borne by the Bank of Ghana.Speaking on KeyPoints on TV3 on May 9, Gyamfi defended the economic policies implemented under the Mahama administration, describing the current improvement as one of the most remarkable recoveries from a struggling economy.“We have delivered the most remarkable economic turnaround of an economy that was in a junk status,” he said.According to him, achieving economic stability naturally comes with financial consequences, especially for the central bank.“In delivering these outstanding turnarounds, should there have been no cost? There would definitely be a cost. Who has to bear the cost? It is the central bank,” he added.Gyamfi also dismissed claims by the Minority regarding the financial losses recorded by the Bank of Ghana, insisting that the audited financial statements prepared by KPMG should be regarded as the most credible source.He accused the minority of misleading the public about the central bank’s losses.“Everyone has a right to their own opinions, but no one has a right to their own set of facts,” he stated.Referencing KPMG’s audit report, Gyamfi said the Bank of Ghana recorded an operating loss of GH¢15.6 billion in 2025, contrary to claims by the Minority that the losses stood at GH¢34.9 billion.“If KPMG tells you the Bank of Ghana made a loss of GH¢15.6 billion in 2025, the matter ends there unless you can use facts to impugn their integrity,” he argued.His comments come after Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, disputed the government’s interpretation of the central bank’s financial report.According to Oppong Nkrumah, the GH¢15.6 billion figure only reflects the Bank of Ghana’s core operational loss, while additional losses captured under comprehensive income raise the total figure to nearly GH¢35 billion.“When you go into the accounts, the loss is nothing less than GH¢35 billion. The GH¢15 billion being quoted is only part of the story,” he said during a press briefing.He further alleged that presenting the lower figure was part of a political strategy aimed at downplaying the scale of the losses recorded by the central bank.

Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, has defended the rearrest of the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company, Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, insisting that the actions taken by his outfit were lawful and procedurally justified.Speaking on Joy News on Saturday, May 9, Mr Archer rejected suggestions that EOCO acted improperly in the handling of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="text-blue-600 hover:text-blue-800 underline" href="http://case.News">case.</a>According to him, EOCO exercised restraint and fairness throughout the process despite tensions surrounding the arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.“The first case was withdrawn and they were under arrest, and we could have held them for 48 hours, and we held them for less than 48 hours. We did not breach any process in holding them. We were rather magnanimous in staying late till 9 pm to ensure that due process would go on,” he stated.Archer further disclosed that one of the major challenges EOCO faced during the process was what he described as attempts by some individuals to demand special treatment for the accused persons because of their political and legal connections.“The only problem I had with this issue was that when they [the lawyers for Hanan] came, they wanted everything to stop and listen to Hanan because they thought a red carpet had to be laid for the former Attorney General, and I don’t tolerate that kind of mindset,” he added.The comments come amid growing public debate surrounding the rearrest of Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba after all criminal charges against him and four others were withdrawn on Tuesday, May 5.EOCO initially arrested Hanan and his wife, Faiza Wuni, in June 2025 over allegations of financial misconduct linked to their tenure and activities associated with the National Food Buffer Stock Company.Following investigations, the Attorney General formally filed criminal charges against the accused persons in October 2025.However, on Tuesday, May 5, the Attorney General withdrew all charges against Hanan, his wife Faiza Wuni, and three other accused persons.Despite the withdrawal of the charges, Hanan was rearrested shortly afterward.
