Italy’s absence from the global stage has been extended following a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team, confirming they will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time champions, the Italy national football team, were edged out in a tense playoff encounter that remained level after extra time.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, however, held their composure in the shootout to secure victory, deepening a worrying decline for one of football’s traditional giants.

Italy has now failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups, having also missed the 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 edition in Qatar – an unprecedented downturn for a nation long regarded as a benchmark in international football.

Although Italy enjoyed spells of dominance during the match, their inability to convert chances once again proved costly, a recurring issue in recent qualification campaigns. In contrast, Bosnia and Herzegovina displayed discipline and resilience, ultimately capitalising on the penalty shootout to record a historic triumph.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Denmark national football team also saw their qualification hopes ended, while the Czech Republic national football team secured their place at the tournament with a composed display in their decisive fixture.

Italy’s latest setback is expected to intensify scrutiny of the country’s football structure, with renewed questions surrounding player development, tactical direction, and leadership within the national setup.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the victory marks a landmark achievement, sealing their place at the 2026 World Cup while eliminating Italy in dramatic fashion.
