Jannik Sinner has suffered a stunning early exit from the 2026 Roland Garros tournament after losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round.

The ATP world number one appeared to be in complete control of the match before physical problems dramatically changed the contest on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Sinner dominated the opening stages and looked set for a comfortable victory after taking a commanding 5-1 lead in the third set. However, the momentum shifted completely as Cerundolo won 18 consecutive points while the Italian struggled physically.

The 24-year-old later required medical attention and took a medical timeout off the court, but he was unable to recover fully for the remainder of the match.

After surrendering the third set despite holding a double-break advantage, Sinner managed to win only one game in the fourth set as Cerundolo grew in confidence and intensity.

Although the Italian attempted to fight back in the deciding set, he was unable to capitalize on several key break-point opportunities, with Cerundolo saving 11 of 16 break points during the encounter.

The defeat ends Sinner’s quest for a maiden Roland Garros title and also brings his hopes of completing a Career Grand Slam to a temporary halt.

The shock elimination means the French Open will crown a different Grand Slam champion for the first time in two seasons after Carlos Alcaraz was also ruled out of the tournament due to a wrist injury.

Sinner’s exit comes despite what had been a remarkable clay-court season for the Italian star, who entered the tournament as one of the favorites for the title.

The result marks one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Roland Garros tournament and leaves the men’s draw wide open heading into the later rounds.
