Chinese humanoid robot breaks 100m record

A Chinese humanoid robot has set a new record for the fastest 100-metre sprint by a humanoid robot, clocking 8.86 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.

The robot achieved the feat on August 25, beating the previous robot record of 9.39 seconds, which was set just three days earlier on August 22.

Its time was also faster than the current human 100-metre world record of 9.58 seconds, set by Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt in 2009.

The record-breaking run took place during the second edition of China’s World Humanoid Robot Games, an Olympic-style event designed to showcase advances in robotics.

The competition has attracted more than 2,000 robots taking part in over 1,300 events across 51 disciplines, including running, long jump, table tennis and ballroom dancing.

The rapid improvement in humanoid robot performance comes as China continues to expand its capabilities in robotics and artificial intelligence amid growing technological competition with the United States.

The robot falls after crossing the finish line.

Despite completing the 100-metre sprint in record time, the robot fell after reaching the finish line and colliding with a padded barrier. Sparks were seen coming from its waist following the impact.

The incident highlighted some of the major challenges engineers still face as humanoid robots become faster.

Dennis Hong, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, described the achievement as a significant milestone.

He noted that increasing a bipedal robot’s speed makes balance, control, impact management, actuator performance and mechanical durability considerably more difficult.

Hong also said the fall raises important questions about whether robots can safely stop, identify unexpected obstacles, recover from errors and continue operating after an accident.

World Humanoid Robot Games showcase robotics advances.

The World Humanoid Robot Games go beyond traditional sporting competitions, with robots also participating in team-based challenges designed to simulate real-world situations.

These include household tasks, hotel services and emergency response, reflecting the growing ambition to develop robots capable of assisting humans in everyday environments.

China’s People’s Daily reported that household and care robots remain in the pilot and validation stages, while noting that the challenges involved are driving further development within the country’s robotics industry.

The record-breaking 8.86-second sprint therefore represents more than just a remarkable sporting achievement. It also highlights how quickly humanoid robots are evolving and the technical challenges researchers must overcome before they can safely perform complex tasks in the real world.
