Google removes back button trigger for vignette ads in major update

Google has announced a significant update to its advertising policy that will remove the browser back button as a trigger for vignette ads, starting June 15, 2026.
The change, announced on May 7, 2026, will automatically apply to publishers who have enabled the “Allow additional triggers for vignette ads” option and will roll out across major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, and Opera.

The update is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience and align its advertising ecosystem with new search quality standards. The company said the decision is linked to its policy against “back button hijacking", where websites or scripts disrupt users’ normal navigation by interfering with the back button.
Under the new rule, vignette ads will no longer appear when users attempt to return to a previous page using the browser's back button, a trigger that previously contributed to ad interruptions during navigation.
Google explained that the adjustment is designed to create a more seamless browsing experience while ensuring publishers comply with updated user experience guidelines across its network.

Importantly, the company confirmed that no action is required from publishers, as the removal of the trigger will be implemented automatically on its end.
The update is expected to reduce intrusive ad experiences and strengthen trust in digital advertising, particularly across mobile and web browsing environments.
