Morocco forward Brahim Diaz has spoken publicly for the first time following the dramatic conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, offering a heartfelt apology after missing a decisive penalty in his country’s 1–0 extra-time defeat to Senegal.

Posting on social media, Díaz expressed remorse for the miss, shared his disappointment, and thanked supporters for standing behind him throughout the tournament. In his message, he wrote:

“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you have given me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn’t alone. I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all.”

Despite the heartbreak in Rabat, Díaz delivered one of the most memorable individual campaigns of the competition.
He scored five goals in five consecutive matches, earned the Golden Boot, and played a central role in Morocco’s journey to the final—including critical group-stage finishes and a key strike in the quarter-final win over Cameroon.

But on the biggest night of all, a single moment proved decisive. Deep into stoppage time, VAR awarded Morocco a penalty after a review of a challenge in the box. The call triggered heated scenes, with Senegal coach Pape Thiaw briefly withdrawing his players in protest before order was restored.

With the stadium holding its breath, Díaz stepped forward. Attempting a composed Panenka finish, he watched goalkeeper Édouard Mendy remain upright and make the save that ultimately forced extra time — and swung momentum in Senegal’s favour.

Taking Responsibility and Looking Ahead

In his statement, Díaz personally accepted blame for the outcome and addressed supporters directly:

“Yesterday I failed, and I take full responsibility and apologise from the bottom of my heart. It will take me time to recover, because this wound does not heal easily, but I will try. Not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me and for everyone who suffered with me.”

His reflections underscored the emotional toll elite competition exacts on athletes — and the deep connection between national teams and the communities they represent.
