Ipswich Town secure Premier League promotion after dominant win over QPR

Ipswich Town have sealed an immediate return to the Premier League after a convincing victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the Championship season.
Just 12 months after relegation—following a difficult top-flight campaign that yielded only four wins—manager Kieran McKenna has guided the club back to the elite level at the first attempt.
Heading into the decisive fixture at Portman Road, Ipswich knew victory would guarantee automatic promotion regardless of results involving rivals Millwall and Middlesbrough.
The hosts wasted no time asserting control, with early goals from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene inside the opening nine minutes putting them firmly on course. Substitute Kasey McAteer added a late third to complete a dominant performance.

The result confirms Ipswich’s third promotion in four seasons under McKenna, capping a remarkable period of progress for the Suffolk-based club.
QPR End Season on a Low
For Queens Park Rangers, the defeat rounded off a disappointing end to the campaign. The London side finished 15th after suffering four consecutive losses and going six matches without a win, extending their stay in the Championship to 11 straight seasons.
Ipswich’s promotion campaign was far from straightforward. Despite being pre-season favourites, the squad underwent major changes following the departures of key players like Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson.
A slow start saw the team go winless in August, and a home defeat to Charlton Athletic in October left them languishing in 13th place. However, their form improved significantly in December, highlighted by a double over eventual champions Coventry, including an impressive 2-0 away win.
Crucially, Ipswich built momentum through consistency rather than dominance. They lost just three of their last 25 matches and only once in their final 15 games—a form that ultimately proved decisive in the promotion race.

Key Moments That Defined the Campaign
A crucial win over Birmingham City on Easter Monday propelled Ipswich into the top two late in the season, taking advantage of Middlesbrough’s slump in form.
Another standout moment came with a 2-0 victory over Norwich City, completing their first East Anglian derby double in 33 years.
Although a shock defeat to Portsmouth briefly threatened their push, Ipswich maintained control of their fate and delivered when it mattered most.
Ipswich Town’s return to the Premier League marks a significant achievement for the club and its supporters, signalling a successful rebuild and renewed ambition at the highest level of English football.
