Paris Saint-Germain claimed yet another piece of silverware in their remarkable 2025 campaign on Wednesday, 17 December, edging Flamengo 2–1 on penalties to lift FIFA’s Intercontinental Cup after a 1–1 draw following extra time at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

The triumph marked PSG’s sixth major trophy of the year, adding the Intercontinental Cup to an already glittering collection that includes Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, the Trophée des Champions, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

The French champions took the lead in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia showed composure in front of goal to finish clinically and put PSG ahead.

Flamengo responded strongly after the interval, with Jorginho calmly converting a penalty in the 62nd minute to restore parity for the Copa Libertadores holders.

Both sides had opportunities as the contest grew increasingly tense. PSG pushed for a winner late in normal time but were denied by a series of saves from Flamengo goalkeeper Agustín Rossi.

Flamengo, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter during extra time but failed to apply the finishing touch.

With the match unresolved after 120 minutes, the final was decided by penalties, where PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov emerged as the decisive figure.

Vitinha successfully converted PSG’s opening kick, although Ousmane Dembélé missed his attempt. Safonov then produced crucial saves to swing the momentum in PSG’s favour.

Nuno Mendes converted to move PSG to the brink of victory before Safonov sealed the triumph by denying Luiz Araújo, securing the Intercontinental Cup and underlining PSG’s dominance on the global stage in 2025.
