Referee Pascal Kaiser gets brutal beating at home after proposing to his 'girlfriend'

German amateur referee Pascal Kaiser was physically assaulted at his home overnight from Saturday to Sunday, more than a week after his public marriage proposal.
According to L'Équipe, Kaiser drew widespread attention when he proposed to his boyfriend, Moritz, at Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion around the Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg, which ended 1-0, in front of nearly 50,000 fans.

Active on social media in the fight against homophobia, he prompted a strong reaction across Germany.
The day before the assault, he received explicit threats that mentioned where he lives. He contacted police, who told him there was no immediate danger.

He says that about 20 minutes after that response, he stepped into his garden for a cigarette, where three men were waiting and violently attacked him.
Kaiser links the attack directly to his proposal, saying he was targeted for that public act. He suffered an injury to his right eye.
