Senegal cemented their status as the continent’s dominant force after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time to win the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, sealing their second title in three editions of the tournament.

With Africa’s two highest-ranked national teams meeting on the grand stage, anticipation was immense—and Morocco’s fan base delivered an electric atmosphere.

The Atlas Lions roared on their side early, but despite both nations boasting formidable defensive records, the match unfolded at an unexpectedly fast tempo.

Yassine Bounou was called into action early, denying Pape Gueye’s close-range header before Ismael Saibari fired wide at the opposite end.

Just before the interval, Iliman Ndiaye came inches from breaking the deadlock when he burst through on goal, only for Bounou to block his low drive with a stretching leg.

Senegal appeared sharper across the opening period, but Morocco asserted themselves after the restart.

Ayoub El Kaabi twice came close, shaving the post after a clever pass from Bilal El Khannouss, before momentum was disrupted by a lengthy injury stoppage for Neil El Aynaoui.

Senegal manager Pape Thiaw rolled the dice with attacking substitutions and was left fuming when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala whistled early, cancelling what would have been a headed goal from Idrissa Gueye.

Controversy followed deep into stoppage time when VAR awarded Morocco a penalty for a foul by El Hadji Malick Diouf on Brahim Díaz.

After heated protests from the Senegalese players caused a lengthy delay, Díaz chipped a tame effort straight at Édouard Mendy, sending the encounter into extra time.

Within minutes of the restart, the match delivered its defining moment. Senegal broke with pace, and Pape Gueye held off Achraf Hakimi before unleashing a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner to silence the stadium.

Morocco threw caution aside in search of a response. Nayef Aguerd rattled the crossbar with a towering header, and Bounou made a desperate fingertip save to deny Cherif Ndiaye from sealing the win late on.

But Senegal held firm to become the first nation since 1982 to beat the host in an AFCON final.

The triumph confirms Senegal’s golden generation, adding to their maiden title in 2021. Morocco, despite thrilling supporters throughout the tournament, were left heartbroken as their quest for a first AFCON crown in half a century came up agonisingly short.
