Former Ghana international Yaw Yeboah has received a lifetime ban from Major League Soccer (MLS) after breaching the league’s gambling regulations.

In a statement released on Monday, MLS announced that Yeboah and American midfielder Derrick Jones have both been permanently suspended following an investigation into betting activities connected to league matches.

Although neither player is currently signed to an MLS club, the sanctions stem from their actions during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The investigation began after the league received suspicious betting alerts from its integrity monitoring partners. MLS then engaged the law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP to conduct a comprehensive review, while both players were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.

According to the findings, the players were involved in significant betting on football matches, including games involving their own teams. In one particular case highlighted by the league, both players placed a wager on Jones to receive a yellow card during a match on October 19, 2024 — which ultimately happened.

Investigators also concluded that the two players likely shared confidential information with other bettors regarding plans to receive yellow cards. However, MLS stated that there was no evidence to suggest the betting influenced the final outcome of any match.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber emphasised the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game, noting that strict enforcement of gambling policies remains a top priority.

Yeboah, who previously represented the Ghana national football team, spent part of his career playing in Europe before later featuring in MLS. The lifetime ban effectively ends his participation in MLS competitions and represents one of the league’s most severe punishments for betting-related violations.

Earlier in his career, Yeboah played for clubs including Manchester City, Real Oviedo, CD Numancia and Wisła Kraków. He recently joined Chinese Super League side Qingdao Hainiu F.C. on a free transfer last month.
